After meandering about on select groups among the homesteading and survivalist types, the issue of finding a mate generally comes up while being frowned upon to 'advertise on the group'. Tossing 'the lonely hearts' to the internet dating sites is as tossing them into a den of hungry wolves.
The homesteading, survivalist, self-sustainable life-style is not considered part of the norm and you won't notice it more than in attempting to locate a life long mate. Besides, the software scripts are set up with fake, international profiles, geared to make people think many registered users are there to entice you to pay!
Yet I did like the idea of a full profile with some added information as listed on my forum, but geared toward the homesteader and the life.
Eventually, I'll get more codes to allow for blogs and more photo's (though blogs and video may well be a premium pay later to support the server). Homesteading is difficult and we tend to like to brag a bit.
With other meandering, I've also noticed a few trends which should find a better medium or venue. When you get to the forums you'll see this in the Help Wanted - Bartered section.
If you can cut through a few stereotypes - which no longer hold true in these economic climate: tent cities and what not. The Homesteading type should be able to set up and follow an old lost tradition of the homesteaders of yore.
Cobbers, self-sustainable builders who attempt this alone, find a need for some assistance. Some offer a working vacation, which would be as 'free camping' for someone who can't afford the usual fees at state parks or private camps and the work is as camping out with the homesteading flair. Yet the finding the specific groups and posting to a forum in a general category seems to be like a message in a bottle.
Such postings were found on hiker's or vagabond forums. Now, hikers generally do have a destination! There are also RV'ers, van-dwellers and other forms of transport. These folks have temporary roots at best and travel the states working at will or as can.
There is a new group all throughout the US also: the tent city dwellers. It is not so odd that after loosing one's home the job also follows. These folks may well be seeking longer stay to get on their feet, yet I'd suspect they have fewer skills as the hiker, van-dweller or RVist. People who have had stationary jobs and lives generally don't acquire various skills (certainly not the bushcraft type), so their skills may be much more singular. Still, such an exchange could prove to be another win win situation.

A bit about the forums
|
I set the profiles up for everyone. Looking for a mate? Ok, place in your profile your general stats if you feel that's important (though your picture surely would show if your 98 or 350 lbs and as most digital camera's are color, we will be able to see the grey creeping in!).
Overall though, it's nice to see a profile of a poster of a forum. The groups such as on yahoo are ok, although with so many people it's difficult to keep straight who is who as the posts fly by.
Let's not forget that it's easier to see a photo of that chicken coop then simply reading about how you did it!
To those of you who are Single Homesteaders and the like. I don't have to tell you the learned patience and just doing without! (I've an antique Martin house sitting on it's side for three years!) YES, I'm open to a hiker to rest off the trail a while and help with those odd two man jobs around here!
Beyond that, some helpful tricks and tips are in order and not just for The Single Homesteader. Anything to make a chore easier or things to run smoother is a welcome luxury to any homesteader.
I don't want business advertising here but there are some good stores out there. I will place links to sites (even forums) which are specific to certain helps which I personally have found invaluable after long searching for such helps. As the internet is so clogged with DIY, ask the expert and I will add the Ask Yahoo, which may give good assistance IF you take the time to read and re-read and piece it together. Most times your lucky if someone does reply with sound advice. So the sites which do are a godsend.
If you have such a site, please to share. Should that site prove to be a wealth of information, I'll set it in a forever post on top of a section.
